Before They Pass Away...

Jimmy Nelson, a photographer has traveled every continent to make a visual diary of tribal traditions that live in various places that are increasingly becoming rare. His quest went on for an year before he returned. The photos that he has brought back are simply mesmerizing. They show the vibrant and royal traditions of the several tribals from all five (according to information) continents. 
Amongst the several others, are some of the Indian tribes. The Drokpa, the Rabari,  and the Ladakhi are all tries of India.

Leonardo Da vinci

A story

A very engaging story Leonardo I heard from my art teacher (Experiences make a man- Prateyush das): Leonardo Da Vinci would visit an old age home very frequently. The reason: he saw a particular old man who looked never never tensed or did not have any reason to be sad or to worry about. He was always calm, smiling and happy. This struck Leonardo and his curiosity impelled him to continuously visit the old age home to observe this particular man. 

Leonardo wondered, how can such a man, who does not have anything to worry about, who hardly gets anxious, tensed or angry and stays calm, possibly die?

So, he visited him and quietly observed him. This went on for a long time until alas, the man died. Leonardo was very happy, for now he could dissect his body and find  out what went wrong, what did he die of. After a long tedious process of dissection of several of his body parts, he found out the reason. 
The man died because his arteries ad veins had become weak. They had become brittle, and could not take pressure. As the heart had become used to not taking higher pressure of blood, it succumbed and gave up when recieved a slightly higher pressure. 

So what I gather from this is that everything, including stress helps us in staying fit. But again, everything in moderation.

One would fall short of appreciation for Da vinci. An artist will be sized down to a dwarf in front of Leonardo's art. in  These are some of his diagrams that he sketched after every dissection that he did.
He combined his skill with science, which is extraordinary. People also say he was way ahead of his time in every possible branch of science, maybe 100 years ahead.

Vitruvian man and proportions

The Vitruvian Man is a drawing created by Leonardo da Vinci circa 1490. It is accompanied by notes based on the work of the architect Vitruvius.The drawing is based on the correlations of ideal human proportions with geometry described by the ancient Roman architectVitruvius in Book III of his treatise De Architectura. Vitruvius described the human figure as being the principal source of proportion among the Classical orders of architecture. Vitruvius determined that the ideal body should be eight heads high.

This image exemplifies the blend of art and science during the Renaissance and provides the perfect example of Leonardo's keen interest in proportion. He believed the workings of the human body to be an analogy for the workings of the universe."

The first paragraph of the upper part reports Vitruvius: "Vetruvio, architect, puts in his work on architecture that the measurements of man are in nature distributed in this manner, that is:
a palm is four fingers
a foot is four palms
a cubit is six palms
four cubits make a man
a pace is four cubits








a man is 24 palms"if you open your legs enough that your head is lowered by one-fourteenth of your height and raise your hands enough that your extended fingers touch the line of the top of your head, know that the centre of the extended limbs will be the navel, and the space between the legs will be an equilateral triangle".

The lower section of text gives these proportions:
the length of the outspread arms is equal to the height of a man
from the hairline to the bottom of the chin is one-tenth of the height of a man
from below the chin to the top of the head is one-eighth of the height of a man
from above the chest to the top of the head is one-sixth of the height of a man
from above the chest to the hairline is one-seventh of the height of a man.
the maximum width of the shoulders is a quarter of the height of a man.
from the chest to the top of the head is a quarter of the height of a man.
the distance from the elbow to the tip of the hand is a quarter of the height of a man.
the distance from the elbow to the armpit is one-eighth of the height of a man.
the length of the hand is one-tenth of the height of a man.
the foot is one-seventh of the height of a man.
from below the foot to below the knee is a quarter of the height of a man.
the distances from below the chin to the nose and the eyebrows and the hairline are equal to the ears and to one-third of the face.

LIVING WITH COMPLEXITY

The Human Clock

So this is "The human clock". The image keeps changing every minute. An engaging way of keeping track of your time and using it judiciously...or wasting it by staring at the changing pictures whole day long. Your choice.

A School dance-drama Poster

So this was an idea that I had thought for the play, which was based on how the Earth gives birth to man, and how man repays her by destroying every element of hers: Water, land, fire.

So I made the poster for the dance drama. It is not at all direct depiction of a scene, but infact, an allegory. 

We see an ice cube, a piece of hilly land which is on fire. But what is interesting (atleast to me), is the arrangement of the elements. They are arranged in a way that they are destroying eachother. The land is on fire, causing the flora and fauna to die; the fire is melting the ice and evaporating water and slowly depleting it;the water that drops out of the ice, extinguishes the fire.

In our daily environment, the elements are placed in such a way, that they work in a synchronized manner. The sun (fire element), which is ate the top, blazes upon the mountains and later on rivers. The ice on mountains melt to slowly, drop-by-drop, form a small water source only to form a  river. This river then flows all the way to the plains to to irrigate the lands, germinate seed, wash away droughts of the land and nourish and support life (Also in the river's due course the sun evaporates water to only return it as rain to wash away all sorrows). 

This is interesting, particularly when discussing team work and working as a group. How each element is capable of and has the potential to destroy the other elements and how they don't and work in harmony. There is a very apt scene depicting the same in the movie "Life of Pi", where the tiger swims to catch fish, and does not kill and eat Pi, even though he could have. He could have easily swum to the little float Pi had made, but chooses not to, because they were 

inter-dependent. Pi could also survive the cast off because he was kept on his toes by the tiger, as there was always a chance that the tiger decided to kill him.

But what is even more engaging is how this is an allegory to the situation of the human society. We have yet to learn to work as the various elements of the Earth, with knowledge, respect, commodities, being circulated, only for the good of us and the society. Every individual has a unique talent, capability, but will only be of any use when it is utilized for a purpose in favour of improving the society.The rivers could have never originated from the mountains had not there been the sun (fire). Then even if water has the remedy to all our sorrows, it will fail in it's only purpose of existence.
